Teaching Philosophy
We believe that “Every child has dignity; Every child is able to learn; Every child is able to succeed”. This is infused into our teaching approach which pledges to engage every student in learning and establish a platform for every student to succeed.

Unlocking English = Engage + Establish
Establishing the LRC-Curriculum to engage everyone

The three major underlying principles in our curriculum planning are: Learner-centred curriculum, Reading as the cornerstone, and Confidence building.

(1) Learner-centred curriculum
To foster a holistic language development of our students, skills in meaning and purposeful tasks are integrated with the infusion of positive values and attitudes in the curriculum. We meticulously designed learning guides to engage students in doing preparation for every lesson, promoting their autonomy in learning, and encouraging personal, critical reflection.

(2) Reading as the cornerstone of language development
We place a strong emphasis on reading in the curriculum planning. In the first thirty minutes of each school day (‘POWER TIME’ – Positive Outcomes While Enjoying Reading), students read books of various disciplines. They are also strategically exposed to a wide variety of texts including newspapers, magazines and multi-modal texts in English lessons and cross-curricular project learning.

(3) Confidence building
We build our students’ confidence to use English by engaging them in learning activities both inside and outside classroom. Inside classroom, students have developed a habit of speaking English at all times and participate in communicative speaking activities. Outside classroom, they experience diversified life-wide activities to extend their language learning experiences in authentic contexts such as study tours, writing and speaking competitions.

Realising the LRC curriculum in a five-stage learning & teaching
A five-stage learning and teaching framework has been designed to allow every student to be engaged in the learner-centred lesson and establish learning habits, confidence and motivation in learning English. Learning and teaching are best represented in the following diagram describing 5 stages of a lesson: Preparation, Lesson Objectives (Attitude-Skill-Knowledge), Co-construction of Knowledge, Peer and Teacher’s Evaluation and Reflection. A rich array of learning and teaching materials have been selected from the ‘Open Class’ conducted in November 2018 for the ‘Sharing Teaching Materials’ section to illustrate how we implement our LRC curriculum using this framework, including the teaching of grammar, reading and writing skills.

Advancing learning and teaching through collaborative professionalism
We have established a culture of collaboration through lesson study, and lessons of the English Department are open to education practitioners at least twice a year. Lesson study through Open Class at FKYC is organised into five stages: (1) Discuss the content and design materials for the Open Class; (2) Conduct trial lessons; (3) Revise learning and teaching materials; (4) Conduct Open Class; (5) Conduct post lesson conference. ‘Celebrating collaborative professionalism 2018’ is one of our open class reflection collections. Each colleague narrates and reflects upon how they prepare for the open class, from discussing and design materials, conducting trial lessons, revising materials, conducting the open class to the post lesson conference. Teachers’ growth mindset is sustained through collaborative professionalism.
